My Quirky Valentine is a quirky cat-art show that reveals and celebrates the innumerable diversities and expressions of love. As the Persian poet, Rumi would say, “A thousand half-loves must be forsaken to take one whole heart home.” Indeed, it is important to grow into the person that you are first (which is more a process of letting go then changing oneself), come full circle into all the unique qualities that define us, and when truly realized, reflects the universal. With this connectedness, it is essentially a celebration of emptiness that contains everything! And everything becomes a celebration...

"The whole world lives within a safeguarding, fish inside waves, birds held in the sky... even the ground, the water, every spark floating up from the fire, all subsist, exist, are held in the divine. Nothing is ever alone for a single moment." ~Rumi

The minute I heard my first love story
I started looking for you, not knowing
how blind that was.

Lovers don't finally meet somewhere.
They're in each other all along.
~Rumi

My Quirky Valentine is about the thousand half-loves that fire our imagination to that which we truly love, the passion which fills our hearts and minds. As our hearts get  larger, it seems capable of holding more things, it becomes flexible, lighter, and funnier! In the same way, the more we hold on to our identity, the more solid our problems become. It always pays to look at the lighter side of things...

"We are such stuff
As dreams are made on,
and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep."
~Shakespeare

"That Furry Thing Called Love", 30 x 30"

Love is a mainly-furry thing,
It's the April rose that only grows in the early spring,
Love is nature's way of giving a reason to be living,
The golden crown that makes a man a king.
Once on a high and windy hill,
In the morning mist two lovers kissed and the world stood still,
Then your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it how to sing,
Yes, true love's a mainly furry thing.

Now to stand still, to be here,
Feel my own weight and density!...
Now there is time and Time is young.
O, in this single hour I live
All of myself and do not move
I, the pursued, who madly ran,
Stand still, stand still, and stop the Sun!
~May Sarton

Now, come fly away with me....

catmaSutra cat art exhibition 6 - Six Appeal!

Bright, quirky, happy, and extremely sticky... the underlying sweetener that prods and gels catmaSutra 6 into existence. In preparing for Six Appeal, somebody has turned the hour glass upside down ... night becomes day... and mornings slip away before I can shake my dreams away. It's the sweetest constellation, regulated not by the ticking of the clock, but by an 'unnatural' natural rhythm (the stoned-out vampire syndrome). The rainy days are a plus, beating down the incessant heat with its own intense outpouring. The strong thumping of the rain in the early morning hours, in the afternoons and the nights exudes a weird sense of completion. Haha I have taken so many photos of the rain that I can probably do an album on the theme soon. Along with scouting for music (for music that resonates is the sound of the soul), listening to the rain, painting and watching the entire range of activities my cats go through (which ain't that many, considering their favourite zzz pastime)- this is truly the sweet taste of freedom.

Have a beautiful vision.
Walk softy, live gently.
Find your own stars
live for them...

So this is the theme for catmaSutra Six Appeal, finding that quirky, delightful feeling that makes you contemplate and believe that things can be transformed just by holding on to a vision; for an artist, how an empty canvas can be transformed by an idea, into the sweetest constellation - the personal configuration of stars that allows us to move in the way we want. All we can do is believe and follow the signs, or as the catmaSutra cats would have it, the code of Meowism...

...

Been raining crazy the past days... but then again, I do like the rain and its music. The sound of rain falling is  like a grand symphony, the chorus followed by the melody...the air cool and moist with birds chirping their little songs one after another. It's all seamless, one blending into another, the waves of thumping raindrops, a strong outpouring and then fades and softens. We take for granted the passing of each day but the rain makes us stop and we should stop for a while. Maybe rain is like music, our little music videos that allow us to swim in its melody... In the grand scheme of things, our time here is short; it's as if we're living on borrowed time.  Every thing fades and softens...

How I loved the rain-
Used to be
because it felt like
redemption
for things we did
and didn't do.

The comfort of rain-
because it seemed cold
but  it's warm within.
It tasted bitter-sweet,
 this hidden smile
this fateful tear

I still love the rain
but now only as change
from a sunny day..

Catmasutra 5 painting exhibition

It's that time of the year when the cats of CatmaSutra come out to play!

Back to his quirky best, Paul Koh tugs at the heartstrings yet again and takes you to a bewildering and delightful fairy-tale realm. Snuggling up to the knowing and mischievious Catmasutra cat, you'll discover a place where emotions are innocent enough to run free, and dreams more than just make-believe. Quirky, amusing and karmic, Paul's paintings unveil an “in-between” world where innocence and mischief go hand in hand.

Michelle Chang's series, A Blue Beginning is a story of Angel who thinks he's got a bout of blues. He's determined to rid himself of this and so begins his quest. Angel travels far and wide and arrives at villages beyond the hills and magical lands, all in the hopes of finding a cure. He basks under the sunlight hoping to turn orange like his friend Halo. He sleeps under the starry night praying for a silver lining so that maybe, just maybe, he will not be blue anymore. Michelle Chang is taking a 2-year hiatus to complete her largest collection of work about Angel and his blues which will be unveiled in 2010 so come experience the beginning of an exciting journey!

December... it's the end of the year again... rains and showers are becoming more frequent... (I'm constantly getting drenched on the bike), the recession is hip again (you can hear about it all the time)... but no matter, the Christmas lights are out and time is the great reversal of things. Everything is just a matter of time - it just depends if you believe in whatever it is you believe enough. So here I am again - the traditional year-end Catmasutra exhibition, now in its fifth year! I could have sworn that once I woke up and saw Halo (my ginger cat) with her eyes wide shut and she had that famous "ear-to-ear" grin! Haha There will be quite a collection of works this year, a showcase of both new and old. I'm keeping the prices similar to that of Catmasutra 4 so do pop by and visit the gallery - and you might find yourself owning a little bit of mischief and good cheer...

And if you wanna get a Catmasutra skin for your laptop, visit

(Drop me a line if you have a favorite Catmasutra painting that you would like me to convert into skins)
